SFSU President Corrigan honored with leadership awards

President Corrigan honored with leadership awards

November 20 , 2009 -- In recognition of his exemplary leadership, President Corrigan received the San Francisco Business Times' Most Admired CEO award on Nov. 19. He also recently received the 2009 Distinguished Service Award from the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU).

SF State President Robert A. Corrigan

As SF State's president for 21 years, Corrigan has transformed the learning culture -- students learn as much in the community as they do in the classroom and faculty are able to combine teaching with scholarly research. He has made the University a true partner with the city of San Francisco and has ensured that the campus reflects the diversity of California.

Corrigan was one of 14 Bay Area CEOs recognized by the Business Times for their leadership, financial stewardship and community involvement. Corrigan was named Most Admired CEO in the institution category, recognizing his contribution to the University, the Bay Area and national higher education.

Guided by a commitment to social justice, Corrigan has pioneered learning through community service and his efforts have earned the University national recognition as one of the Princeton Review's "colleges with a conscience." Nearly 300 courses include community participation, involving nearly 40 percent of students each year.

Corrigan has fostered an increased emphasis on research, reflected in the University's $50 million annual income from grants and contracts. He established the Institute for Civic and Community Engagement which applies the University's research to critical Bay Area issues such as inner city education, workforce preparation and housing.

Corrigan has also forged close links with the local business community, serving as president of the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce for two terms, in 2006 and 2007. Under his guidance, the University has developed new academic programs that meet the needs of the regional economy, courses in biotechnology and digital media for example. During Corrigan's tenure, the physical size of the main campus has grown from 95 to 141.6 acres and the Downtown Campus opened in 2007.

SF State is one of the top 15 universities for campus diversity according to U.S. News and World Report 2009 rankings. In particular, Corrigan has made SF State a leader in training and educating minority students in the sciences. He supported the establishment of the Student Enrichment Opportunities office in 1992 which helps send 20 to 25 underrepresented minority students from SF State to doctoral programs each year.

The APLU recognized Corrigan for his significant contribution to increasing diversity and access in the higher education community. During the last two decades, Corrigan has opened the door to education for disadvantaged students through new scholarship programs. Most recently, he established a new partnership to serve the local community -- the SF Promise program which guarantees a place at SF State for all public high school graduates in the San Francisco Unified School District who meet admissions standards.

Corrigan has used creative hiring strategies to recruit a more diverse faculty. When Corrigan became president in 1988, he was greeted by a faculty that was primarily white and male. Today almost half of the faculty members are women and 39 percent are from ethnic minority groups.

SFSU Press Release: Health care reform means new demands on nursing school

November 17, 2009 -- As the U.S. Congress moves toward reform of the health care system and more people gain access to health insurance coverage, the need for highly trained medical professionals is expected to increase. In California, the demand for nurses with baccalaureate and higher degrees continues to grow and is expected to escalate with healthcare reform and changing population demographics.

A $329,670 grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Health Resources and Services Administration, authorized by the U.S. Congress, will enable the SF State School of Nursing to update its Technology Learning Classrooms, which provide students with practical training and exercises in critical thinking.

Congresswoman Jackie Speier was instrumental in obtaining the authorization.

The School of Nursing’s Technology Learning Classrooms are where students can practice their skills in a simulated clinical setting. Rooms of hospital beds and up-to-date medical equipment are also home to patient simulators, computerized mannequins that can be programmed to present a variety of health problems. Emergency care events such as cardiac arrest can be programmed in the mannequins to give nursing students experience that might not occur during their required clinical rotations in hospitals and clinics.  Undergraduate and graduate nursing students also have the opportunity to hone their skills on the latest in health monitoring technology.
In addition to the simulation technology are cameras, recording devices and playback equipment that allow students to review and analyze their reactions and decisions during exercises with the simulators.
"Technological advances in health care and education have revolutionized nursing education," said Shirley Girouard, director of the School of Nursing.  "This federal support will allow the School to be part of the revolution and prepare nurses with the competencies now demanded in the workplace."

Engaging Students in Learning using the Nursing Simulation Lab

Student engagement brings the learners into the experience being presented. Students are no longer passive recipients of instructions; they interact with the experience, building it as the situation progresses. In this video case story, Luanne Livermore, BSN, RN, a clinical instructor of pediatrics for the San Francisco State University School of Nursing, tells how she designs simulation scenarios which help her students in the learning process. The students, too, give their perspective on their experience in this five-part video presentation on a pediatric scenario about the treatment of an acute Tetralogy of Fallot episode.

HHS Secretary Sebelius Addresses AACN's Membership

For Immediate Release

HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius Addresses the
Nation’s Nursing School Deans at AACN Meeting

WASHINGTON, DC, November 3, 2009 - On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), Kathleen Sebelius, U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services, provided a keynote address today during AACN’s fall meeting in Washington, DC. Secretary Sebelius presented remarks to the deans of the nation’s top schools of nursing and underscored the important role nurses play in the movement toward healthcare reform and the response to H1N1.

“Nurses are the healthcare professionals patients most often see. You’re the ones conducting important research on issues like obesity. You’re the ones who give patients the personal contact, interventions, and education they need to help them heal. You pull healthcare teams together and coordinate patient care. You check back with patients to make sure they’re doing what’s important to stay well. And you’re on the front lines, so you know better than anyone that we can’t wait for real reform,” said Secretary Sebelius.

In her remarks, the Secretary touched on a variety of issues of great concern to nursing's academic leaders, including the need for nurses to be at the table in discussions about healthcare reform, the pivotal role these providers have in responding to the H1N1 virus, and the support the Administration has given to strengthen the nursing workforce.  She called for producing more nurses to serve as prevention and wellness specialists as well as more nurse practitioners to lead healthcare (or medical) homes. The Secretary also stressed the need to expand our nation’s population of nurse educators.

“AACN is grateful to Secretary Sebelius for her commitment to strengthening the nursing workforce and, in particular, for providing support for nurse faculty,” said AACN President Fay Raines. “As the voice for professional nursing education, AACN stands ready to work with the Department of Health and Human Services to meet the  nation’s growing demand for nurse faculty, researchers, and clinicians.”

Secretary Sebelius also said:  “The need for more nurses is enormous—this Administration knows that. Over the next decade, nurse retirements and an aging U.S. population will create the need for hundreds of thousands of nurses by 2025. But we intend to meet the demand, with nurses who have the professional skills and knowledge to provide 21st century care.”

The Secretary’s remarks from AACN’s 2009 Fall Meeting are posted online at http://www.hhs.gov/secretary/speeches/sp20091103.html.  Schools wishing to find the latest information about the H1N1 response are encouraged to visit http://www.flu.gov.  For more information on AACN’s government advocacy efforts on behalf of nursing education, see http://www.aacn.nche.edu/Government.

The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) is the national voice for university and four-year college education programs in nursing. Representing more than 640 member schools of nursing at public and private institutions nationwide, AACN's educational, research, governmental advocacy, data collection, publications, and other programs work to establish quality standards for bachelor's- and graduate-degree nursing education, assist deans and directors to implement those standards, influence the nursing profession to improve health care, and promote public support of baccalaureate and graduate nursing education, research, and practice. www.aacn.nche.edu
